Rediscovering Revlon | Summer Makeup Picks

Monday, August 07, 2017

Remember that time when everyone was all about the Revlon Lip Butters? There wasn't a YouTube video or blog post published that didn't feature those quilted cuties. I myself had two of them and loved them to bits - ah Pink Truffle, how I miss thee. I also had their bronze highlighting palette which I enjoyed for a while. But that was pretty much my only encounter with Revlon. That was until they very generously sent me this beautiful array of goodies to play around with. Perfectly in time for summer, these lip and cheek products have been some of my favourites to reach for.

Revlon Ultra HD Gel Lipcolor*

I have to start with my favourites of the bunch and the ones that surprised me the most. I didn't expect much colour pay-off or anything significant with these. These bright metallic slim twist-up crayons house a lipstick formula that has been my go-to these past few weeks. The formula is incredibly pigmented and glides on wonderfully, colouring the lip in only one swipe. They're so comfortable to wear on the lips and hydrating that I often forget I'm wearing them. Of course they're not transfer-proof at all, but that's okay by me. The high shine finish is refreshing for me after wearing only liquid lipsticks for so long. This is like a classic lipstick, with a modern formula and convenient packaging (oh and they smell like candy...yum!).

I don't generally go for pink berry toned lipsticks but I have been enlightened by the shade Vineyard. It's possibly the brightest, boldest lip shade I own and I love it. It's flattering and pretty and I love reaching for this. Desert is a universally flattering mid-tone nude shade that I prefer to wear with a lip liner as it doesn't have the same level of pigmentation as the other shade. Again, one that I've been reaching for loads and loving.

Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipstick - Seduction*

I love the packaging of this and wish I could be quite so positive about the formula. Its confusing to begin with because it's called matte... but it doesn't ever dry down to a matte finish and has more of a sticky mousse texture. The shade is pretty but I find the lipstick isn't pigmented enough meaning that it never really coats my lips evenly and because it never dries down I can't really build it up by adding another layer. Having said that, I still enjoy using this on low-key makeup days because it is a pretty shade and it's comfortable on the lips. It's not one for special occasions but not a complete write-off for me either.

Revlon PhotoReady Insta-Fix Stick - Gold Light*

I can't say I'm the biggest fan of the name of this product and the next, but I understand the need for brands to go with what's trending and relevant to the current target consumer. This is a cream highlighter in a convenient, albeit chunky, twist up tube. The shade is great and I feel like it would look good on most, if not all, skin tones. We all love a little touch of neutral champagne toned shimmer to give us that glow. I would've liked for the formula to be a little softer and bouncier to the touch because I find that applying this stick directly on my face disrupts my makeup I've already applied. I have to use a stippling brush to apply this properly, and once I do the results are stunning. It gives that pretty sheen on the skin that's neither too obvious nor too glittery. This is a great high street option for a cream highlighter that you can use everyday.

Revlon PhotoReady Insta-Blush - Berry Kiss*

This cream blusher comes in the same packaging as the highlighter and while I still hold the same reservations about the name, I really like this blusher. It isn't too pigmented which is a huge plus for me, because if you've used cream blushers before you'll know that there's nothing worse than applying too much cream blusher that you struggle to wipe or blend away. Because this is quite sheer, it's so easy to use and there's very little chance of ruining a whole makeup look with it. Again, I struggle to apply this directly onto my already made up face, but with my fingers or a stippling brush it looks amazing and gives a beautiful deep flush to the cheeks. I also love using this on days when I have no other makeup on just for that touch of colour to the complexion.

It's so great to have some Revlon back in my life and I'm happy to have tried these products. I'm absolutely loving them right now. I think the HD Gel Lipcolors are the clear winners for me and I would recommend you check them out next time you're at the stand. I know I'll be swatching some other shades soon.

Have you tried any of these? What is your fave Revlon product? How much do you miss the Lip Butters? I'd love to know...
