Empties & Mini Reviews | July

Friday, August 11, 2017

Another month and another bunch of empties to run through. I managed to get through (read: let go of) a few makeup items that were dwindling for a while now. I'm also not showing any signs of slowing down with using things up which is great. I am trying really hard to stop myself from purchasing any new things until I use up one from that category (it's obviously still an intention and hasn't materialised into action just yet) so I am hoping I will start seeing some space in my storage appearing soon. Anyway, here we go with this month's mini reviews:

Neal & Wolf Harmony Conditioner

I just love the scent of this product so much. It helps that a few minutes of leaving this through the mid-lengths to ends of my hair leaves my locks soft and hydrated. Oh and of course smelling beautiful!

L'Oréal Casting Creme Gloss - 565 Berry Red

I decided to try a new hair colour product since I feel like the Botanics dried out my hair. I'd read online that this is a popular affordable range. And I absolutely love it! It has coloured my dark brown hair really well without making my whole head of hair look red, but rather reveals beautiful tones of red in sunlight or under indoor lights. It's covered my grey hairs most importantly and my hair and scalp hasn't been left stripped or dry. This also doesn't smell as bad on application which is a welcome bonus.

Drunk elephant C-Firma Day Serum

I was pleasantly surprised to get quite a lot of use out of this mini and I'm so grateful it lasted so long. I really enjoyed trying this serum and will be getting a full size in the future. It is expensive, yes, but it's a lovely light textured Vitamin c Serum that sinks into the skin without feeling overly greasy or oily.

Trilogy Everything Balm

Me and my girls love this balm. We use it on our faces sometimes but mostly on our elbows, knees, random dry patches, on eczema and healing grazes. It has a beautifully delicate scent, melts upon contact with skin and leaves skin feeling supple, nourished and stops it from drying out.

Mustela Very High Protection Sun Lotion SPF50+

This comes in a convenient tube with a pump and is one that I repurchased before we even finished using this. It's has a lovely light texture that is rubbed into the skin quickly without leaving too much of a white cast over the face. It isn't drying at all and actually is quite moisturising on my girls' faces. It casts a gorgeous glow on their skin too which is always lovely. The scent is mild, it's alcohol-free and water-proof and I highly recommend this to fellow mums looking for a good facial SPF for their little ones.

Soap & Glory One Heck Of A Blot

I love this powder for keeping my skin shine free and for blotting away any excess oiliness. It doesn't cast any whiteness on the face and doesn't get cakey even if I pile it on, though it can of course be drying if you over apply. Admittedly I don't use this as often as I used to and now it actually just lives in my makeup bag to take with me when I go out. I already have my back-up out and ready to roll.

Maybelline Color Tattoo - Creamy Beige

This bad boy needs no introduction. I used this almost daily for a long time because it's a great neutral shade that I can swipe on and use to even out my eye lids or as a base for any other shadows. This is quite old and dried up now so its time to let it go and I'm sad to see it go. But I will definitely get another pot of this and love that it will be an affordable one to replace :)

Klairs Rich Moist Soothing Sheet Mask

I really enjoyed this mask because it was a nice fit, thoroughly saturated and left my skin plump and juicy. Haha! There was so much serum in this pack that I was able to use it on my neck, chest and arms and still keep a significant amount of it in a pot to use later on that night. It didn't have any distinct scent and would be suitable for even sensitive skin types. I've got another one already but will be ordering some more soon.

I also used up:

Soap & Glory Glad Hair Day Conditioner
Institut Karite Hand Cream
Caudalie Divine Oil

THE ONES I MIGHT CONSIDER REPURCHASING (basically if they go on sale)

Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge

This is my second sponge that I'm done using. And whilst I did use it and make the most of it, I still believe this one differed significantly to my first one being less bouncy and more firm in texture. I preferred to use this to get rid of any marks left by buffing in my foundation with a brush but didn't enjoy using it so much to blend out foundation as I feel the sponge soaked up too much product. I do prefer the bouncier Beauty Blender to this but wouldn't exactly hate to have this again.

Caudalie VinoPerfect Radiance Serum*

This was a pretty generous deluxe size product as I was able to use it every morning for a whole week. I think every sample should be at least 10ml to really test out a product and see if it's worth purchasing in full. This has a very milky consistency that takes a while to absorb and dry down. I can't say it made my skin glow or anything but I enjoyed the scent and extra layer of hydration I got from this.

Antipodes Avocado Pear Nourishing Night Cream

This is a very rich and thick cream that melts a little with the heat of skin. I got this mini version as part of a set alongside a serum whose scent was so disgusting and unbearable I couldn't use it more than once. This is also strongly scented and although I didn't like this scent at all I enjoyed the texture of the cream. And it is highly nourishing making it perfect to layer on top of acid treatments, retinol products and when my skin is particularly parched.

Benefit They're Real Mascara

I am a huge fan of mascara samples because you get so much product in them and can use them for a few months then throw them out without feeling like you've wasted money. Okay I may have used this far longer than it would be advised but it just carried on giving for so long. This has a funky plastic brush with short bristles around it and a rounded spiky tip which makes it easy to get to the corner lashes (and bottom lashes). I really enjoyed the long lasting, non-smudging formula and would buy it again if it was significantly cheaper or on sale.

I also used up:
The Face Shop The Solution Brightening Face Mask
Naruko Raw Job's Tears Sheet Mask
The Cure Tea Tree Sheet Mask

Original Source Lime & Coconut Oil Body Lotion

As much as I love the scent of this product, it just didn't do anything for my skin. My skin is very dry, especially on my legs, but it just didn't provide any moisture or hydration and I felt like I had to apply a thicker product within an hour of using this.

Caudalie VineActiv 3 in 1 Moisturiser*

Again, another generous and worthy deluxe sample which let me try out the product fully. I wanted to like this a lot but I just didn't find it hydrating enough for my face. It left me with that tight pulling sensation even when layered with a hydrating serum.

Nip + Fab Dragon's Blood Hyaluronic Shot

The click dropper on this provided me with endless entertainment. But other than that it did very little for my skin. I love the cleaning pads from this range and expected this super charged serum to be akin to that but just found it a bit blah. I've used every drop of this and used it mainly like a serum, and sometimes I mixed it with my moisturiser and always found it lacking that oomph of hydration I expected from this. It is a nice gel serum texture and can be patted in nicely but it's not one that impressed me enough to be repurchased.

Lush Mask Of Magnaminty Sample

I've wanted to try this mask for the longest time because I feel like it gets the most hype in the blogging community. So I got a sample and I have to admit, as lovely as it was on the skin, it's far too messy for me to really enjoy this. I don't see what this mask can do for me that my favourite Pixi Glow Mud Mask doesn't do so it's not worth all the extra effort and mess if you ask me.

Korres Black Pine Antiwrinkle & Firming Face Serum

I gave this serum a thorough chance and have used every drop of it, but apart from loving the sexy black packaging and the subtle sweet scent, I can't say it did anything noticeable for me to want to purchase it again. Maybe it works as a preventative serum rather than one where you can visibly see its effects but it just didn't seem potent enough to me. I still have the oil from this range that I'm struggling to use up too!

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer

I've talked about my mixed feelings with this now iconic concealer a few times now. And I've settled on this - it isn't as creamy as I'd like, it creases far too much, and feels quite drying on my under-eye area. And I'm just glad they've released the Soft Matte Complete Concealers because I much prefer the texture, finish and performance of that one. I am not sorry to see this go as I did get a fair bit of use out of it and no longer feel the need to complain about the hype because I have a replacement product that far exceeds this.

Jouer Long-Wear Creme Mousse Eyeshadow - Galaxy

This was a stunning glitter mousse that I used to pat onto my eyes on special occasions. But it's dried up so badly now that it's useless. I could probably bring it to life with some kind of mixing solution but I just feel like my Colourpop super shocks do the exact same thing as this plus this is quite old so it's not a total loss in any sense.
