best tinted lip balms for pigmented hyperpigmented lips asian indian medium skin

Hyperpigmentation is a natural condition that occurs when skin is darker in some areas than others, where there is an excess of melanin - the pigment that gives our skin its natural colour. Although hyperpigmentation on the lips is a common genetically determined condition, especially on people of colour, it's something I have always been very conscious of on myself and resented a fair bit actually.

Just to paint a little picture of how this affects me: my top lip is significantly darker than my bottom lip, and I have a dark rim around my bottom lip. And for this reason I've spent years avoiding certain lipsticks or shades because it just isn't flattering when the hyperpigmentation shows through.

Being so insecure about my pigmentation issues has meant that full coverage matte lipsticks has been my lip weapon of choice, even though my dry, dehydrated lips despise matte lipsticks so much. I am slowly breaking away from this and I've found tinted lip balms to be a great way to embrace my natural lips without exposing the full extent of the condition. If I know I'll be meeting people and matte lipsticks will be too much, I reach for a tinted lip balm to moisturise my lips while covering some of the hyperpigmentation so I can feel at ease (and my lips can feel hydrated too).

Here are some of the tinted lip balms I've been enjoying that add a little something something to my lips and help me to feel confident in my own skin:

The closest to a lipstick is Pixi Shea Butter Lip Balm - Natural Rose which has a fair amount of coverage, has a creamy texture and is a very beautiful and flattering rosy shade that works wonderfully on my skin tone. I believe the stylish and slim Jouer Lip Sheer - Positano has been discontinued which is a shame because it's a lovely berry toned tinted balm that I keep in my handbag because I can apply it without a mirror. The next two are true tinted balms in that they are nourishing and hydrating and offer a very sheer tint to perk up the lips. Trish McEvoy Lip Perfector Conditioning Balm* has a pretty pink tint and just enhances the natural colour of my lips. It doesn't hide the hyperpigmentation at all but the tint it does provide is enough to deter from it. I actually prefer Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm - Red Dahlia to the shade I have here because it is deeper and works better on my lips but I haven't repurchased that shade. Hibiscus is an orange toned tint which is nice for summer. I finally bought Lanolips Tinted Balm - Rhubarb which combines the amazing Lanolips formula with a shade that deepens the lip colour and adds a flattering shine. This one is especially amazing because it provides sun protection too which is important because sun exposure can accentuate and darken hyperpigmentation.

  1. I never really thought about hyperpigmentation on lips before so this was really interesting. Last summer, I had some patches of it on my cheekbones because the meds I was taking reacted with the sun on holiday (despite wearing SPF 50) and I was pretty conscious of them, especially when my lovely little niece kept pointing them out! lol! They have faded now after some hard working products but I understand how it would make you self-conscious.

The Jouer lip product is absolutely gorgeous! xx

  6. I'm losing the pigmentation in mine, it comes to all of us i guess. I need to try the Pixi balms, i almost picked one up at the weekend but my budget said 'no'. Burns Bees always sound so good too and I love the shade of that Jouer. Im a huge fan of lip balms and love ones with a good spf in too.

    1. Yes, it can happen in either direction I suppose. I don't know why more lip balms aren't formulated with SPF in them to be honest xxx

  7. I have never really thought about hyperpigmentation on the lips, I only suffer from it on my face. But now that you mention it I agree, it would be a problem for me as well, should I be affected, and I would have opted for opaque only too.
It is great that you have found alternatives to nourish your lips a little.

    1. Yes, it can be really depressing because I can't just pick up any lippie and slap it on. I have to line my lips with the right liner, it has to be opaque and the right tone etc. Embracing them a little more is really helping these days though xxx
