April | Empties & Mini Reviews

Monday, May 08, 2017

I've gone from feeling super proud of myself for getting through so many products each month, to feeling burdened by all this collected recycling. I think I am losing my interest in writing up Empties posts even though these are some of my favourites to read. So for this post, to keep it somewhat manageable for myself, I am only going to be doing mini reviews of the products that I actually have some kind of remark about...

THE ONES I WILL DEFINITELY REPURCHASE (if I haven't already)

Philosophy Purity Made Simple 3-in-1 Cleanser isn't a basic cleanser though it is seemingly simple. This is super gentle cleanser is great for breaking down makeup and grime, toning and refreshing the skin and leaving skin feeling hydrated and soothed. I used this in the mornings with my Foreo Luna Mini 2 for a lovely, uplifting cleanse to get my day started. It has a clean scent that I sometimes liked and other times resented but otherwise this is a great cleanser for everyone even those with sensitive skin.

I really enjoyed the KoreBeauty Anti-Ageing Hydrogel Facial Mask* which is unlike your traditional sheet masks as the mask is made with the serum itself. I don't particularly like how slippery this is but its a perfect one to lie down wearing and have some chill-out time while the skin is plumped and hydrated. Also, you can use the code umm25 for 25% off any purchases on their site.

Merumaya Youth Preservation Moisturiser is wonderfully rich and nourishing without being overly greasy even on my oily/combination skin. I love the pump dispenser too which always is a bonus. This SPF15 version is now discontinued but thankfully there is an SPF20 version of the exact same moisturiser now so yay!

I've had this Rodial Glam Balm Lip for ages now and I love it so much that I've already purchased another one. This is the best lip balm to use before using a liquid lipstick for me because it is hydrating and slightly plumping meaning that my lipstick won't settle into lines and look unflattering. I just apply this to my lips before I begin my makeup and by the time I get to my lipstick, my lips are perfectly plump and ready for even the most drying of matte lipsticks.

Of course I have to mention Nip+Fab Dragon's Blood Fix Cleansing Pads which I use as a morning toner and have gotten through numerous tubs of these. They are highly saturated and I find they provide that first layer of hydration for the day ahead. Also, Nip+Fab Glycolic Fix Night Pads Extreme are such a quick and easy way to exfoliate your skin at the end of the day, as they help to refine skin texture and unclog pores and gently remove dead skin cells. These are not irritating and far more effective than the regular ones which I just don't find potent enough.

THE ONES I MIGHT CONSIDER REPURCHASING (basically if they go on sale)

I finally got through another foundation and it only took me about 2 years to use this up. Soap & Glory One Heck Of A Blot Foundation is great for oily skin and those looking for a fuller coverage foundation from the highstreet/drugstore. It is very thick and can be difficult to blend out but I liked the finish and shade match of this which is why I used it so much. I've got other foundations that I would repurchase before this one but if it ever were half price or something, I wouldn't turn my nose up at it.

I'm sure I've said this before but I'm going to say it again - I love mascara samples because you get so much product and they tend to last a long time. I didn't like Makeup Forever Excessive Lash Mascara at first and found it a little bit blah. But as it aged and dried a little I grew to love it. It adds a little extra volume and length and mostly this is great for really defined lashes that widen the eyes. I'm not a high-end mascara girl though so I would definitley only get it as a sample again or on sale.

I was sent OGX Biotin & Collagen Shampoo & Conditioner* last year but I've only just used them up because I ended up using so many other products since I opened them. These are the only 'volumising' hair cleansing duos that don't excessively dry out my hair, which is great even though I can't say they have helped me achieve thicker and fuller looking hair. I do love the scent of these though, like a sophisticated perfume and wouldn't mind using them again in the future.

Rituals The Ritual Of Sakura Magic Touch Body Cream came in an advent calendar last year and oh gosh, when I say this smells incredible, I am not kidding. Its a grown up scent that is both subtle and sexy and while the cream itself isn't the most nourishing, the smell of this makes it worth it. This is the most uplifting body scent I have tried to start the day with.

THE ONES I NEVER WANT IN MY LIFE AGAIN (no way, no how!)

So I've been hoarding this sample of Kat Von D Lock-It Foundation for so long, its not even funny but now that I've tried it, I can quite confidently say hoarding it for so long wasn't a crime in any way. The shade was obviously far too light and neutral for my skintone, but aside from that it was so thick and unflattering on the skin. I could barely blend it out before it started setting to my face and when I eventually got it looking half decent I realised it looked pretty awful - settling into pores and lines, clinging to dry patches and looking completely mask-like. I don't want this in my life ever again even in the right shade.

At first I was super excited by The Body Shop Skin Defence because it seemed super similar to the Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence in packaging, texture and ingredients and thought it would be great as a replacement because the Biore takes so long to arrive. But the more I used it, the more I realised that this was nowhere near as friendly as the Biore which melts into skin, feels completely weightless and leaves a slight tackiness without being greasy. This however smells so strongly of alcohol that the moment I apply this anywhere, my eyes start watering and stinging and it becomes painful for me to use it. I have about 1/4 left in here that I can't bring myself to use up because its so strong and unpleasant.

Finally, Ren Vita Mineral Lip Balm isn't actually a bad product at all - in fact this helped me through some of the worst episodes of chapped, peeling lips this past winter. The thing that winds me up about this is that the neck of the tube split soon after I started using it so I've always been using it by squeezing product through the cracked opening. Its so annoying because it meant I could never take it out with me and it seems like something that any brand can deal with and overcome. I mean, I've never had any Carmex tubes split open like that.

I hope you enjoyed my version of a condensed rambling Empties post. Let me know if you think I should continue writing these or if a quick picture of my Empties on Instagram would suffice. I'd love to know...
