top brown lipsticks for beginners jouer mac colourpop

best affordable brown lipsticks jouer mac colourpop

I'll be honest, when brown lips started trending I did get a little freaked out and might have even had a few panic attacks. I don't know why, it just scared me. It looks fabulous on so many of the gorgeous girls I see on my IG feed but I was convinced it wasn't for me. I felt like it would completely clash on me and make me look old(er).

Fast forward many months, and I'm still not quite ready for a deep chocolate brown at all but I've come across some lovely milder brown lip choices that still make me comfortable and that I enjoy wearing.

So if you're anything like me, half afraid of the brown lip trend, or just not sure where to begin, here are my picks for beginners:

best brown lipsticks for medium skin tone

MAC Matte Lipstick - WHIRL | review | £15.50

I'm going to start with this lipstick as it is a great way to ease yourself into the trend. Appearing more rosy brown in the daytime, this number transforms into a bold brown mauve shade in the evening and was my first experience of seeing myself in a brown lip. It's great to have a day and night lipstick option all in one bullet although if you have lighter skin, this will probably look rather more brown on you all day.

A great choice to test the waters for those who are truly afraid of wearing a brown lip.

ColourPop Ultra Matte Lip - BEEPER | review | $6

This liquid lipstick dries darker than it appears on the tube to reveal a medium warm brown shade that has a slight pink (almost grey) undertone. It's another great in-between shade as it isn't fully brown so I keep myself calm by seeing it as a deep nude shade. This will come across very dark on lighter skin tones and beautifully balanced on deeper skin tones.

Ideal for anyone wanting to try wearing a brown lip without spending too much.

Jouer Long-Wear Lip Creme Liquid Lipstick - NOISETTE | review | £14

This medium neutral brown shade is great for us beginners as it is a true brown without being in your face and bold. It doesn't lean too warm and orange nor does it sway too cool and greyish. It's a beautiful sophisticated shade that makes me enjoy wearing a brown lipstick. This will look great on all skin tones, appearing darker on lighter skintones and making a most excellent nude shade for deeper skins.

Perfect for those ready to embrace the trend while staying cautious.

All three of these let me experience the brown lip trend without making me uncomfortable. I shocked myself with how drawn I was to Noisette and I know that I only felt ready to purchase it because I had some experience with the other two shades. Although I do still find brown lips a little ageing, I like how sophisticated it looks, and is definitely a nice contrast to my usual pinky choices.

So if have always been a little nervous at the thought of wearing a brown lip, I hope that this post has given you some courage to at least give it a go with a choice that isn't too out there.
